Welcome to Remark & Rose!

 

The name was created by bringing together my maiden name and married name, representing both my roots and everything I have learned along the way, from growing up on the farm to building a life with my husband.

I’m also a mom of three, and my kids are often involved in what I’m creating. One of the things I love most is being able to show them that hard work pays off, and that it’s worth having dreams and goals to work toward. I’ve always imagined having a business of my own. As a child, I even planned to one day open a dance studio called Remark. Seeing that name become part of this business now feels incredibly special. Building Remark & Rose has been a huge accomplishment and a dream come true, and it truly would not have been possible without the people who supported and believed in me, especially in those early days of creating.

During COVID, while spending more time working from home and raising our kids, I learned to manage my time differently and realized I needed a creative outlet. I started scrapbooking with my daughter during lockdown and was also working on adding more character to the walls of our newly built home. When I began searching for pieces like macramé wall hangings, I had a hard time finding anything that felt unique or different.

After doing some research, I found a local Canadian supplier and decided to try making my own. I purchased her book on different knotting techniques, watched countless YouTube videos, and slowly turned a small hobby into something more. As I completed larger projects, word of mouth began to spread, and family and friends encouraged me to turn my creations into a business. From there, I was able to have products carried in local storefronts and began attending markets.

After about a year of making macramé, I started to feel limited in the types of products I could offer. That led me to invest in a laser machine and begin working more with wood and other materials. Expanding into laser technology opened up the ability to create with wood, acrylic, paper, cardboard, leather, metal, and more.

​

When I use my laser, it cuts and engraves material using a concentrated laser beam. For more detailed 3D pieces, once the material is cut, either with the laser or by hand using my scroll saw, I shape it with a Dremel and sand each piece by hand to create a more realistic finish. I use high-quality spray paint and often layer different shades within the same colour palette to create shadows, depth, and dimension.

I’m also a huge advocate for encouraging others to create something of their own. I host craft nights for everything from girls’ nights to Christmas parties, where I teach the class and you get to create the piece yourself. Remark & Rose also offers rentals including arches and décor for events and photoshoots. Whether you’re a photographer styling a shoot or planning a special event, the rental pieces can be decorated and styled to suit your vision, and I can also help with styling and design if needed.
